An electric circuit is defined as a closed path where current flows. It is basically composed of a source, a conductor, a switch and a load. The circuit is actually complete without a switch, but it has been considered as a basic component because almost all electric circuits nowadays include a switch.

The source, as the name applies, is the one that provides power to the circuit. It can be a form of a 110-volt power line or just a single dry cell. The conductor of an electric circuit is a pair of metals, usually wires, that completes the path of current from the source to the load and vice versa. Aside from individual switching, the parallel circuit is also used because the voltage drops for each load are equal and the same with the source. For a comparison of circuits with a 12-volt source, four light bulbs connected in series will have three volts on each bulb while four light bulbs connected in parallel will each have twelve volts voltage drop. In practical applications, combination of the two types of circuit is also common.
